I later got past the brickwall by conventional research.Ī long time after the disappointing DNA experience my conventional research revealed that my extended family almost certainly had male members named Vines in it whose genetic fathers were not named Vines. Furthermore my DNA has since been stored in their database for several years and there has never been a near match with anyone else. ![]() Sadly my DNA was not even remotely like theirs so that was a waste of time. My idea was that if the DNA test showed that I had a close common ancestor with that family I might be able to 'see' behind the brickwall and work forwards attack it from the far side so to speak. In frustration I had a DNA test to see whether I could find a link to a large, well-researched pool of families with the same surname as mine where conventional research had taken it back to the 16th century. Several years ago I hit a major and longstanding brickwall affecting my Vines great grandfather.
